Gas Stoves are a Novelty

I can’t remember, prior to relocating to #vancouver, when I have not used a gas stove. And I remember finding it a little odd last year while apartment hunting that all the stoves were electric. Same with house hunting. Electric stoves. They’re not the most conducive cooking options, you have little control over temperature but I found it curious that everywhere had electric stoves.

It wasn’t until our landlord installed a gas stove that I understood why gas stoves are a novelty in Vancouver: no gas lines.

Well, fewer gas lines, especially in residential neighborhoods. Without gas lines, it’s hard to use a gas stove. Electricity however, easy to come by, everywhere. Its transit system runs on electricity.

And gas stoves are such a novelty, getting one serviced is a challenge. Our burners are a little, um, finicky. Our landlord was nice enough to stop by and give a solid effort at fixing it, thanks to some Googling. Our stove is just stubborn, and kind of particular. The knob has to be turned just right, one requires counting to ten before it lights and sometimes you need to turn two knobs. A gas stove with an attitude.

I know how that goes.
