Lull

Some workmates and myself met up with a softball teammate for lunch yesterday. Turns out we work close to each other, which is rather nice.

We were all talking while waiting for our orders, and the observation was made that it was only Tuesday. The week seemed to be dragging. And the lack of softball was a contributing factor.

Every week, all summer, softball was something to look forward to. It was something fun after a work, a dedicated opportunity to get out and meet people, get some exercise and have some fun.

One thing I’ve noticed is that playing a team sport takes the pressure off of meeting people. You start with something in common, you see each other every week for a season and get to know them. You share the joy of winning and the agony of defeat. Cliche, sure, but when you’ve moved to a country where everything but the language is different, cliches are surprisingly comforting. A universal truth.

So the lull is being felt by all. The trick is to find other things to do to fill the void. Granted, some time in the lull is nice. Some time to relax. It was nice to go home after work, fling open the patio door and play some Uncharted.

But I can’t stay in the lull. I need to be out doing something, preferably with people. And there are two events coming up that will help.

One is tonight: Canadians baseball game. W00T! The other is river rafting over Labor Day weekend. W00T!

After that, I don’t know. Been trying to get myself on a dodgeball team. And there’s basketball. Running clubs. Perhaps soccer. Something.

Before I know, one year will be gone, one will be left. And that’s OK. I’m OK with having fun. 😉
