In the States, we know them as a Bachelor or Bachelorette party. We might know them more by the corresponding reality TV shows, The Bachelor and The Bachelorette. According to Wikipedia, there are a number of different names for this event. Bull’s party in South Africa. Buck’s party in Australia. Who knew?
The name seems to be the overriding difference, and of cultural influence. Curious, no? Americans pick a word for a “student,” or “young squire in training” and keep it. The UK, Canada, South Africa and Australia choose a word that describes a single male animal, or just a male animal. A dominant male, for that matter.
Young squire in training. Or so it was before becoming synonymous with being single, or “eligible.” Yet it sticks in the States, a country that likes to proclaim both its dominance and independence.
