Skimboarding, Standup Paddle Boarding and Kayaking

Last weekend, on my long walk where I developed my tidal curiosity, I saw some big skids throwing what looked like wood boards, running after them, jumping on and either turning like carving in snow or trying to jump obstacles. It was kind of like skateboarding on water, but water is more of a drag than wheels against concrete. Most of the time the boards fell short of the obstacles.

Never-the-less, I was intrigued so I stopped to watch, snap a few photos. It looked fun, though falling looked painful. Then again, falling on sand is softer than concrete. What exactly was supposed to happen once you cleared an obstacle I wasn’t sure. The board, most of the time, lost its momentum and it and the rider just fell.

On my way back, a couple guys were getting out of a car and picking up boards. I stopped and we chatted for a few minutes. The boards are made out of plywood, and are wider than a skateboard. Sanded down really well, painted, very much like a skateboard for water.

For the life of me, I couldn’t remember what it was called. I had an Evernote note, though, for the Jericho Sailing Center. Since it’s raining today (surprise surprise), I looked up the Sailing Center and Windsure. Low and behold, it’s called Skimboarding, and Windsure has summer camps to learn how!

Between that, standup paddle boarding and ocean kayaking with Ecomarine, I’ll have a whole new set of experiences. And will probably discover a whole new set of muscle groups as well. Running will seem quite tame, though in conjunction with these other options, I might be able to run up Yew sooner rather than later.
