While living in temporary dwellings, I took advantage of the cable TV and watched the local evening news. I was struck by two things:
1. Vancouver local news lacks the political charge of Chicago news.
2. The Canadian cable provider had a number of Seattle news stations, usually a network affiliate of NBC, CBS, ABC and probably Fox.
There wasn’t much news in Vancouver. And it took a little bit to figure out what was missing. Shootings, for example. There weren’t any. Sports was limited to hockey, namely the Canucks. Not even high school sports were covered.
The teacher’s strike was the biggest news story. Biggest local story. There was a good deal of time devoted to national news, or other news in other parts of Canada.
Their public television is pretty good though. Like the States, though more in depth. I can see why my coworkers say to skip Canadian news and watch the BBC.
There isn’t something like Chicago Tonight, though. History of Vancouver seems to be a mystery.
American news seems unique. And rich. Local news. National news. International news. Public television with local and syndicated shows. Our media history is just as rich.
Not getting that same sense in Vancouver. Curious.
