Auditory Hell

My roommates are incredibly perceptive, it is sometimes scary.

That phrase, "auditory hell," is from one of my roommates. We were in the car, driving somewhere, and without thinking I made a comment about it being the third (or maybe it was fifth) time we'd heard a particular song since the last time we were in the car.

Wait. Wait. Let me back up a step.

I'm an auditory learner. I learn best when I hear things first. Most assume that means I'm actually looking at them, engaging in eye contact and all the normal "active" listening signals. That is not always the case. I may look away, talk to myself, or look otherwise engaged but I'm still absorbing what you're saying. I'm just adding avenues to better store the information for future reference. Unless of course I'm uninterested in what you have to say, in which case I've tuned you out. No offense. It just happens sometimes, and all you have to do is ask. I will either repeat what you said, or tell you I wasn't listening. Other times, if you just keep talking, you'll say something that piques my interest and then I get overly engaged. I'll ask lots of questions because I want to know more.

Anyway, so I'm an auditory learner. I do talk to myself, out loud. I am known to quote movie lines and song lyrics, not to mention random TV show lines and commercial jingles. Anyone remember the Hollywood.com jingle? "Hollywood-dot-com/Hollywood-dot-com/Theatre listings/theatre listings/show times and interviews." Ring a bell? It used to play before the feature presentation at the Gurnee Mills move theatre back home, in like, the 1990s.

As I've mentioned, Canadian radio is governed by asinine rules. I wasn't kidding when I said Canadian radio only plays five songs in its rotation, the five most popular songs, mind you, thus ignoring a whole swath of otherwise good Canadian music. Instead, Canadian DJs play, say, Classified's "Inner Ninja", often. There was a time when it was on the radio every time I got in a car. The ride to work. The ride home. There was no escaping it! Goyte was the same.

Auditory hell indeed.

Thank God for Unblock-us so I can listen to Pandora Radio.
